Winning God’s attention and securing His favor is a desire shared by every Christian. At times, our prayers may feel inadequate, leaving us questioning if God hears us, or we may dwell on past sins, doubting the extent of His forgiveness. While prayer is often emphasized as the key to moving God, the process can still seem elusive. In this exploration, we’ll uncover the true essence of prayer and discover the one way to genuinely move God.
Imagine yourself as a caring parent to a teenager. What actions from your child would truly influence you to fulfill their desires? Would it be the intensity of their tears, the volume and persistence of their requests, or the frequency with which they seek you out? Likely not. A loving parent desires to provide for their child’s needs without unnecessary stress. This analogy aligns with a message from Jesus Christ in Matthew 7:11-12.
So, what moves God? The scripture emphasizes two points:
First, Jesus illuminates God’s love for His followers, and secondly, he outlines the reciprocity involved in seeking good things for oneself. It reveals that just as parents wish to provide for their children, they also desire respect, discipline, and appreciation in return. This echoes the sentiment in verse 12, stating that we should treat others as we wish to be treated, encapsulating the essence of both love and responsibility.
To move God effectively, we must understand what He expects from us as His children and reciprocate accordingly. The key lies in possessing the heart of a worshipper, characterized by three essential elements:
- Faith in God: True faith involves not just acknowledging God’s existence but surrendering to Him and walking in His power. Faith precedes obedience and is the foundation for a genuine connection with God (2 John 1:6).
- Obedience to God: Obedience is an expression of love for God, as outlined in Romans 5:19. It is a natural response to faith, and when children obey their parents, they receive the good things they need. Obedience becomes easier when fueled by a belief in God’s existence and power.
- Love for God: The heart of a worshipper is perpetually filled with love. Jesus underscores the paramount importance of loving God with all our being in Mark 12:28-31. This love is the driving force behind both faith and obedience.
In essence, those who cultivate the heart of a worshipper can easily move God. It’s crucial to understand that God is moved not by the outward manifestations of emotion or the duration of our prayers but by the sincerity of our hearts. The attention of God is captured by the heart of a worshipper, making the fulfillment of our desires, even the seemingly impossible ones, more attainable.
Rather than focusing on moving God, we should prioritize pleasing Him. The heart of the worshipper seeks to please God above all else. The surest way to move God lies not in our emotions or the length of our prayers but in our ability to genuinely please Him.
